About this time specialized shows began being organized, emphasizing on such topics as so-called “underground comics”,13 EC Comics,54 women in comics, and individual creators like Frank Frazetta. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Comic-Con International, the comic book and pop culture extravaganza, is kicking off in San Diego. The convention, which draws over 130,000 fans annually, opens for a preview night Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

Bringing Awareness to Comics & POPULAR ART

In recent years, the number of television shows that are promoted far outnumber films. During the 2011 convention, at least 80 TV shows were represented, compared to about 35 films.48 The shows not only promote in the exhibit halls, but also use screenings and panels of various actors, writers, producers, and others from their shows. Greenberg and Great Eastern Conventions disappeared from the fan convention circuit from that time. While several parties and events are invitation-only — including the notable Entertainment Weekly party that draws huge crowds and several celebrities — visitors can keep an eye out for events and pop-ups throughout the city’s Gaslamp Quarter. The area surrounding the convention center embraces the spirit of the weekend, with local businesses, restaurants and bars typically rolling out Comic-Con-specific products or menus. On the Wednesday evening prior to the official opening, professionals, exhibitors, and pre-registered guests for all four days can attend a pre-event, dubbed “Preview Night”, to give attendees the opportunity to walk the exhibit hall and see what will be available during the convention. San Diego Comic Convention is a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to creating the general public’s awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular art forms.

Events

Commercial conventions are usually quite expensive and are hosted in hotels. This represents a change for comic book conventions, which were traditionally more oriented toward comic books as a mode heroconventions.com of literature, and maintained less differentiation between professional and fan. The first recorded “official” comic book convention occurred in 1964 in New York City. Produced by John Benson,15 guests included Jack Kirby, Jim Steranko, Otto Binder, Len Brown, Larry Ivie, Jack Binder, Roy Thomas, Gil Kane, Archie Goodwin, Bhob Stewart, Klaus Nordling, Sal Trapani, Rocke Mastroserio, and Ted White. Nowadays, comic conventions are big business, with recurring shows in every major American city. Comic book conventions in name only, the biggest shows include a large range of popular culture and entertainment elements of virtually all genres, including horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels.

The New York Comic Con is an annual New York City fan convention dedicated to Western comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, cosplay,4 toys, movies, and television. It was first held in 2006.5 With an attendance of 200,000 in 2022, it is North America’s most attended fan convention. The New York Comic Con is a for-profit event produced and managed by ReedPop, a division of RX and Reed Elsevier, and is not affiliated with the long running non-profit San Diego Comic-Con, nor the Big Apple Convention, later known as the Big Apple Comic-Con, owned by Wizard Entertainment. There are also workshops, that are like panels but are more geared towards instructions through a major or specific task such as how to draw comics, or use industry-specific software. Another event at most comic book conventions include screenings of movies and TV shows that can last through the day. The main exhibit hall, which includes larger well-recognized companies, takes up halls F through A.

Over the past two decades, the CAC has continued to grow at Comic-Con, offering programs and presentations all four days of the event. Founded by Dan Vado of SLG Publishing, the Alternative Press Expo was one of many shows across the United States that year that focused on independent comics. Vado’s vision was to create an event that would spotlight small publishing companies, self-publishers, and creators working in the alternative and independent side of the comics industry. This show also allowed greater interaction between attendees and creators and added fuel to the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) comics movement growing around the world.

The guests of honor were Stan Lee and Burne Hogarth39 This annual convention, which later became known as the Comic Art Convention (CAC), hosted the presentation of the Alley Awards from 1968 to 1970.31 CAC ran annually (occasionally in Philadelphia) over Independence Day weekend, until 1983. In England, Phil Clarke produced Comicon ’68 (British Comic Art Convention) at the Midland Hotel, Birmingham, from August 30 to September 2, 1968. “Member”-guests include Alan Moore, Paul Neary, Jim Baikie, Steve Moore, and Nick Landau; there were 70 attendees.13 The British Comicon ran annually, variously in Birmingham, London, and Sheffield, until 1981. Comic-cons were traditionally organized by fans on a not-for-profit basis,1 though nowadays most events catering to fans are managed by commercial interests for profit. Many conventions have award presentations relating to comics (such as the Eisner Awards, which have been presented at San Diego Comic-Con since 1988; or the Harvey Awards, which have been presented at a variety of venues also since 1988). Beyond the convention hall, San Diego will be buzzing with activities, brand activations, parties and events celebrating all things pop culture.

They feature a wide variety of activities and panels, with a larger number of attendees participating with cosplay than for most other types of fan conventions. Comic book conventions are also used as a method by which publishers, distributors, and retailers represent their comic-related releases. Comic book conventions may be considered derivatives of science-fiction conventions, which began during the late 1930s. The Con has grown in size every year, starting with 35,000 attendees in 201110 and expanding to over 123,000 attendees in 2019.311 The convention has drawn big names to match its big crowds, with celebrities like Elijah Wood,12 Ron Perlman,12 Gabriel Iglesias,13 Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson,14 and Gerard Way15 attending in years’ past. The event has seen an amazing array of comics and book publishers in its Exhibit Hall over the years.

Rinaldo Traini and Romano Calisi (forming the International Congress of Cartoonists and Animators) held the Salone Internazionale del Comics (“International Congress of Comics”) in Bordighera.32 In 1966, it was relocated to a small piazza in the center of Lucca, and has grown in size and importance over the years. After their absence from the convention last year due to the actors strike, stars are returning to the convention in full force to showcase upcoming series and movies. While the lineup for Marvel’s panel will likely remain under wraps until the event starts, several A-listers are confirmed to attend the convention.

Most comic book conventions occur during a weekend, with events scheduled between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Saturday is typically the busiest day, as most fans must return home on Sunday. Comic-Con International also runs the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Awards, an annual event featured at the San Diego convention that allows fans to nominate their favorite comic book stores from around the world. The prestigious award goes to those retailers who have done an outstanding job of supporting the comics medium, both in the community and within the industry at large. Visionary comic creator Will Eisner approached Comic-Con in the mid-1990s with the idea for this award. It’s designed to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible contribution retailers make to the comic book industry by providing that crucial link between creator and reader in getting comics into the hands of the public.
